"Welp, thats New York for ya."

"Well, thats __________ for ya." Have you ever had anyone say that to you? (That was not a rhetoricle question. I will wait approximately three days and 7 hours for a response)

Haha, just kidding....of course I am....anyway

This is the phrase commonly used by those who have experienced something to the point where all of the odd and strange things about that experience become the everyday average norm. The point of this senseless rambling is that I have experienced multiple things over the weekend and the earlier part of this week, that if I told them to someone that knows alot about New York then they would grace my ears with "Welp, thats New York for ya." Here we go.

Sunday, I am on my way to enjoy some culinary socialry (dinner) with two amazing people, Sean Carnahan and Laura Adkins of GCSU'S graduating class of 2006 and I am waiting at the subway stop and this guy comes up to me and, without introduction he proceeds to tell me that if I lifted dumbells then I could "put anotha inch on my "OM" (arm) and tone up a little and I would look good, Id look good...not too much just a...just a lil bit...I dont wanna go too much..just a lil bit and all the girls would be....all the girls would be goin for me. Not that he was gay or anythin but he knows..he goes to a gym...crunch on 34th and 3rd (thats not actually where it was, I dont remember)..so he knows... he knows

So this was the beginning of a 45 minute train ride and my friend, Bobby, I found out later was his name entertained me the whole way to Union Square. Dont get me wrong, I am not making fun of the guy but he was a very interesting character and I loved his Brooklyn accent....seriously. We...and I mean.... he... talked about tons of things. It was hard to hear him because of the train and luckily he didnt ask alot of questions so I didnt have to respond much. Apparently he was ok with me just saying..."Uh huh...Oh cool...yeah...thats awesome..yeah, that wouldnt be too good...Ok...yeah...Ok...cool.
It got worse at one point it was so hard to hear him on the train and then John Coltraine Jr. comes onto the train and oblidges us with a serenade of "Somewhere over the rainbow" with his saxaphone. It was very beautiful.
"Thats New York for ya."

Up next, on my way home that night I saw a dead rat on the steps going out of the subway station....YES, thats awesome!!!!!!!
"Thats New York for ya"
Some other crazy things have happened but thats new York for ya so i dont see any need to dwell...

So onto stuff about the show. This week was pretty awesome. We had a guy come Monday that will be on the Friday show and his act is outside. Hes the one I mentioned on my previous blog about how my bosses found him through the website I gave them. I got to meet and talk with him as well as being behind the set for rehearsal and the actual show!!!!! It was awesome getting to see all of the crew members around with the cameras and as well as meeting ou human interest guest I got to meet Biff Henderson. If you ever watch the show he is one of the guys that Dave puts on the show all the time and he was very nice and was interested in where I was from. Among the Late Show Regulars, I met the voice of the Late Show, Alan Kaulter and Paul Shaffers kids came into the intern room today so I got to meet them and Paul Shaffer. Pretty neat.

Ummm, lets see oh, We had Dalton Carricker on the Show, Tuesday. He is the 12 year old that hit the winning home run in the Little League World series game, Georgia Vs. Japan. I was told to take T-shirts to his family and he was in there with them so I got to shake his hand and congratulate him on his success. I met one more semi-famous person today. Even if you are not fans I am sure all of you know what "Halo" is. If not, then its a really popular video game. Anyway, I met one of the head writers of Halo 3, due to be released September 23rd. He is friends with the human interest segment producer and he stopped by today.

Well, thats New York for ya. I know the post is rather long but alot happened. So get over it...anyway, I miss everyone. See ya later!

The Rock was Superbad

So my first week at the Late show is over and I am pleased to say it has been quite the experience. I also have good news!!! I cant tell you what it is but on Friday my boss, Ryan, told me to search the internet for someone that could do a specific "Something" in the United States. I jumped on a computer and found a website and sent the link to Ryan. He then found what he needed from that website!! I was pretty stoked to be apart of the process. So keep and eye out for next Fridays show. I had a hand in getting the human interest guest.

The other interns and i went out to a place called the Rodeobar last night to celebrate our survival of the first week. The place had really good food and it was just really nice to get to hang out in our own element.

Today a few of us went to Rockefellar Center and went on the "Top of the Rock Tour". It was pretty cool. We went all the way to the top and was able to see the whole city. Its your typical tourist attraction but once we were at the top it hit once again that I was living the dream in one of the greatest cities in thew world with some of the nicest people Ive ever met.
I took a bunch of pictures and I have posted a video of us in the Rock elevator for you to enjoy below.

After the Rock we grabbed some New York style pizza (for the fifth time this week) and then watched the movie Superbad.
Wow. Thats really all I can say. I wont encourage anyone to see it but Im not gonna lie when I say I highly enjoyed it and its one of the funniest movies Ive seen in a long time.

Then we parted ways and hopped on the good ole F train to Brooklyn and stopped by the Church Ave. Restaraunt Cafe for some authentic Athenian Gyros and then concluded the evening with a three hour long phone call to parentals. Not a bad day. Till next time....uummmm...see ya.

Sprinting Manhattan

Alright, so im not sure how often im going to update this blog but I am going to try and do it often enough to give everyone an idea of whats going on.

So today I had my first Manhattan outing. My mission was to run down to 42nd and 8th to a sports shop called Modells for a can of tennis balls. Not sure why but thats what I did. I got to see the city and its on broadway so its the best part to explore, so that was fun.

I am still on the hunt for the perfect human and pet tricks but havent found many yet but we will see. Ok, so not alot happened at the studio but when I got home, to brooklyn...yeah, I know...weird....my roomate and his girlfriend wanted to go to target so I tagged along. It was quite an adventure. We knew where we were going but we got mixed up on the subway and got turned around but then we got on the right "track"...Ha!!! Im so funny....anyway, we were on the right track and survived our little adventure. I felt like I was in the movie Adventures in babysitting starring Elizabeth Shue from the Back to the Future franchise and co-starring soon to be RENT star, Anthony Rapp. Anyway, it was kind of hectic at first and we were underground for most of the night but once we figured out where we were, we were waiting on a train that was above ground and we look up and see the Statue of Liberty and the skyline and I forgot how crazy the city was and just remembered that this was my dream, that I was living...Im loving it.
Ok, so Im not going to be too sentimental but this experience is pretty awesome and I cant wait to share more with ya'll. See ya, Tyler

Genesis (The beginning)

Ok. Wow!!! So it all started in September of 2006. Now its almost September of 2007. God works in super crazy ways. If you dont know me and just randomly stumbled upon my blog, my name is Tyler and I am a Senior at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga. My major is Mass Communication with a concentration in Tellecomunications, specializing in T.V. Broadcasting...whoo...thats alot to say aint it?

Well, This blog is primarily to share with the masses, my experience in New York City, working for the man....not the government, but the real man, David Letterman!!!! I am an intern in the Human Interest department at the Late Show. I am living in Kensington, Brooklyn which is right next to Prospect park (Yeah, Im not sure where it is either) but its a cool place and about a 45 minute train ride from the Studio so its not bad.
"What do you do Tyler?"
Well, I am glad you asked, basically I am one of the many gatekeepers in the H.I. Department who looks for people to bring on the show for bits like Stupid Human and pet Tricks and other average Joes and Josephines who can do weird and interesting things. My job is to skim through newspapers and magazines to find any stories potentially interesting. Once I am done with those, I go to watch tapes and laugh at how funny people THINK they are...but they really arent. Then I move back to the newspapers and magazines.

So far, I have not met any celebrities but i do have stories about some of the perks of the job.
On Tuesday, I am sitting in the conferance room hanging out with the New York Post and the Miami Herald when three Late Show employees walk in carring a box and a large bag each and said that McDonalds had donated 100 Big macs and 100 cartons of fries to teh late Show staff...no one really knows why, but we partook in the friendly gesture and continued on our business. Then, I get back to my conversation with the Herald and Paul Shaffer starts walking down the hall, playing an accordian. he then stopd in the doorway of the conferance room and continues to play while talking with one of the producers....wow!!!, Eating FREE McDonalds and getting seranaded by paul Shaffer (inadvertantly) in one day!!! So that was pretty cool. Thats really all I have right now for ya. I am having a blast getting to know everyone and I get to watch the rehearsals on the closed network, up in the office building so the perks are pretty awesome. Well, I really want to leave you with a catch line but I cant really think of anything clever to leave you with so sleep good...or well...I guess....See ya bye!
